Desperate, I tried every supplement on the market. Biotin. Viviscal. Nutrafol. The expensive ones that promised “clinically proven results.”
I took them religiously for eight months. My bathroom cabinet looked like a pharmacy.
But nothing grew back. Not a single new hair.
Here's what I discovered: supplements can only address ONE half of the problem.
During menopause, you face TWO simultaneous causes of hair loss:
First, nutritional deficiencies due to poor absorption. As we age, our bodies become less efficient at extracting nutrients from food and supplements. Your follicles are literally starved of the basic elements they need to grow hair.
But that's only half the story.
The second cause, which supplements completely ignore, is the hormonal cascade.
When estrogen levels decline during menopause, it doesn't just cause hot flashes and mood swings. It also triggers a catastrophic chain reaction in the scalp:
Decrease in estrogen → Increase in DHT → Miniaturization of follicles → Hair loss.
Without estrogen to keep it in check, DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a potent androgen, floods your system. DHT attaches itself to hair follicles and literally suffocates them. It shrinks the follicles, shortens the growth phase, and eventually the follicles stop producing hair altogether.
That's why supplements alone can never work for hair loss during menopause.
They provide nutrients to follicles that are being strangled by hormones.
It's like watering a plant while someone else pulls it up by the roots.
I was addressing the nutritional problem while completely ignoring the hormonal crisis that was occurring in my scalp.
